Ron Fort, Chief of Police

Chief Fort began his law enforcement career with the Iowa City Police Department in 1967 when he was hired as a police officer with that department.  Chief Fort served as a police officer, sergeant, and lieutenant with the Iowa City Police Department in assignments including patrol, investigations, narcotics, and bomb squad.  Chief Fort retired from the Iowa City Police Department in 2001 as a patrol watch commander and was hired as Chief of Police with the University Heights Police Department in 2004.  Chief Fort is a graduate of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy's 9th Basic, has a degree in business, and has logged thousands of hours of in-service training throughout his career including various instructor schools.  Chief Fort is a private pilot and enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, boating, reading, family history, computers and motorcycle riding.

 

Brad Reinhard, Sergeant

Sergeant Reinhard began his career with the University Heights Police Department as a reserve officer in 2003, a position which he held until being hired full-time in 2005.  During his time as a reserve officer, Sergeant Reinhard logged an average of over 150 hours of patrol per month, focusing on impaired driving enforcement.  Sergeant Reinhard is a graduate of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy's 208th Basic, and was promoted to sergeant in 2006.  In addition to regular patrol duties, Sergeant Reinhard is the first line supervisor for the full time, part time and reserve officers, serves as the reserve unit liaison, and is responsible for organizing training for all members of the department.  Sergeant Reinhard is a certified Reserve Officer Instructor and holds additional instructor certifications in Firearms, Taser, OWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, RADAR/LIDAR, and TraCS.

 

Matt Fort, Police Officer

Officer Fort was hired by the University Heights Police Department as a Reserve Officer in 2003 and accepted a full-time position later that year.  Officer Fort is a graduate of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy's 197th Basic.  Officer Fort became a part time officer with the department in July of 2004 after resigning his full time position for a position with the New London Police Department.  In 2006, Officer Fort was again hired full time to fill a vacant position.  Officer Fort has also previously been employed as a reserve deputy with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.  Officer Fort holds an instructor certification in Firearms.

 

Don Strong, Police Officer

Officer Strong was hired by the University Heights Police Department as a Reserve Officer in 2004, a position which he held until being hired full-time in 2007.  Officer Strong has previously served as a reserve officer with the West Branch Police Department, as a corrections officer with the Cedar County Sheriff's Office, and in the Iowa National Guard.  Officer Strong is a member of the West Branch Fire Department and is certified as a CPR/AED instructor.  Officer Strong has assisted in the past in installing emergency equipment in the department's patrol cars.

 

Mike Hamm, Police Officer

Officer Hamm was originally hired by the University Heights Police Department as a reserve officer in 2003 and accepted a full-time position later that year.  Officer Hamm is a graduate of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy's 197th Basic and is one of the department's bicycle patrol officers.  Officer Hamm was responsible for nearly half of the department's intoxicated and/or drugged driving arrests in 2005.  Officer Hamm enjoys weight lifting, hunting, camping, fishing, hiking and spending time with his family.  In 2007, Officer Hamm accepted a full-time position with Johnson County Sheriff's Office, but elected to remain a part-time officer with the city of University Heights.

 

Nick Dunbar, Lead Reserve Officer

Lead Reserve Officer Dunbar was hired by the University Heights Police Department in 2001 as one of the department's original reserve officers.  Lead Reserve Officer Dunbar has also previously been employed as an emergency communications dispatcher and is a corrections officer with the Iowa Department of Corrections at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center located in Oakdale.  Lead Reserve Officer Dunbar has a specialized interest in dog training and assists in the training of the Department of Corrections' working dogs on a regular basis.  Lead Reserve Officer Dunbar is instrumental in installing and maintaining the emergency equipment in the department's patrol cars and is a bicycle patrol officer.  Lead Reserve Officer Dunbar has received certification as a CPR/AED instructor.

 

Dennis Culver, Reserve Officer

Reserve Officer Culver was hired by the University Heights Police Department in 2006 and has previous experience as a reserve officer for the Lisbon and West Branch Police Departments.  Reserve Officer Culver also previously served as a corrections officer for the Cedar County Sheriff's Office and is currently a corrections officer with the Iowa Department of Corrections at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center located in Oakdale.  Reserve Officer Culver has received certification as a CPR/AED instructor.

Reserve Officer Siggins was hired by the University Heights Police Department in 2006.  Reserve Officer Siggins is currently employed full time as an emergency communications dispatcher with the Iowa City Police Department and his previously been employed with Cedar Rapids Area Ambulance.  Reserve Officer Siggins also currently serves as a reserve officer with the Lisbon Police Department and is certified as an EMT-Basic.

 

Ryan West, Reserve Officer

Reserve Officer West was hired by the University Heights Police Department in 2007.  Reserve Officer West is employed full time in an armed security position in Linn county.  Reserve Officer West is also a member of the Hiawatha Fire Department and is certified as en EMT-Basic.  Reserve Officer West's father has served as a reserve deputy in a neighboring county for over twenty years.

Casey Hazen, Reserve Officer

Reserve Officer Hazen was hired by the University Heights Police Department in 2007.  Reserve Officer Hazen is employed full time in an armed security position in Linn county.  Reserve Officer Hazen has previously served as a reserve officer with the Columbus Junction and Shellsburg Police Departments and also has full time law enforcement experience.  Reserve Officer Hazen was also previously a member of Iowa National Guard.

 

Josh Lefler, Reserve Officer

Reserve Officer Lefler was hired by the University Heights Police Department in 2007.  Reserve Officer Lefler has a bachelor's degree from DeVry University and is employed full time as a software developer.  Reserve Officer Lefler's father is a law enforcement officer in Nebraska and he has been interested in the field his entire life.

Reserve Officer Andersen was hired by the University Heights Police Department in 2008.  Reserve Officer Andersen is a member of the Iowa National Guard both in a full time, civilian position as well as a volunteer soldier.  Reserve Officer Andersen became involved in the reserve unit as a stepping stone towards beginning a career in law enforcement.

 

Tyler LaKose, Reserve Officer

Reserve Officer LaKose was hired by the University Heights Police Department in 2008.  Reserve Officer LaKose  is currently pursuing a degree in law enforcement from Kirkwood Community College.  Reserve Officer LaKose became involved in the reserve unit as a stepping stone towards beginning a career in law enforcement.
